These "overbanners" looked like a new feature to me as
well, and I have not heard anyone singing their praises
as I have on the AdWords program. I'd guess searchers
are "used to" that approach from other engines and
largely ignore them. As with many things interactive,
the newness wears off after a while and response drops.
We should all expect the same to happen with AdWords
over time.

But for now, I share your concern with too much clutter
and will be watching my AdWords reponse rates like a
hawk.
