Stephanie,

These new browser windows are aptly named "popups", due
to their behaviour. They did indeed originate within
the online adult industry, as is the case with most
innovations in web advertising.

Several advertising agencies have started to support
variations of this technology in order to bring greater
CPM rates to their publishers (in light of the recent
plummet in banner advertising rates), while providing
advertisers with improved response rates. L90 refers to
them as "Power-Ads", Engage calls them "Superstitials",
others have dubbed them "exit consoles" or
"interstitials", but they are all variations upon the
same theme. That is, breaking a visitor's flow of
concentration so as to effectively push an advertiser's
message upon them.

Best regards,
Joshua Smith
