It certainly is in terms of hype. At Comdex in Vegas
and Internet World in NYC it was definitely TNBT.
I may be one of the few people hereabouts already
producing content for wireless applications. IMNSHO the
money in "the wireless web" is largely going to come
from extra billing time spent online. The only possible
good "ad" idea I have heard so far is an opt-in system
that helps you find a coffee shop, gas station, or
bathroom through a WAP portal, or pop-up ads that
appear on your phone when you are near the store you
are looking for, telling you where it is. But this is
not "advertising" in the passive, spoon-fed model we're
used to. Customers will have to actively seek it out.
"Advertisers" will have to get creative and turn their
messages into services before cellular customers will
embrace them.
Mark Twain sent a long letter to a publisher I believe
- he apologized for the length saying "I didn't have
time to write something shorter". Wireless
entrepreneurs are going to have to figure out how to
sell things in 133 characters or less. I can't imagine
what Twain might make of that <g>.
I have to say I shudder at the thought of cell-spam ...
I cannot imagine how frosted I would be to be pushed
ads on my cell phone - especially since I pay for time.
