You are right, the porn sites do it, and more and more
"mainstream" sites are as well. It's annoying, though
it may be effective enough that you can budget out the
complaints, I don't know. I don't respect that kind of
marketing myself. Once I do manage to escape such a
site the only mental note I make is "don't go back,
don't do business here". I worked with ISP customers -
over 160,000 of them - for over 7 years. We got a lot
of complaints about "web traps" (ISP customers tend to
think their ISP *is* the web sometimes, heh heh). One
time we accidentally set a refresh rate or something
on the page that had a similar effect and got dozens of
complaints. We got rid of the offending code
immediately. I really can't imagine why any web
developer would intentionally try to "trap" its
visitors there. It only makes them annoyed and
frustrated - hardly the way to build a good
relationship.
