If we are talking about "click through ratio", I am not
sure how quality of content may affect it as a
potential visitor does not see content yet when finds
your web site in some search engine, or click a banner,
or ...
I would like to share results of our CTRs at GoTo.
We've got 0.7-2.6% CTR for first positions and
analyzing our traffic got the following empiric
formula:
CTR (in %) = A - B * LN (Position)
Where A and B are constants and, for any case, LN is
"logarithm". What is interesting that constants A and B
where stable from month to month and, in our case,
equal to A=1.5 and B=0.5. This formula gives a good
approximation of CTR. Constant A, in fact, is "CTR for
the first position" and constant B probably depends on
audience of a search engine but I would not wonder if
it remains constant for all search engines.
The formula also gives another important result that
CTR will be near zero after 20th position. (It depends
on CTR for the first position or constant A.)
I can't be sure that this formula is valid for other
search engines but think it is. Constants A and B
probably may vary. It would be great if readers of
this forum could analyze their data as well, we would
know then how CTR depends on position more exactly.
Best regards,
