I found that our web site mailing list started to look
more interesting to advertisers once we got over 5,000
opt-in names on our web mailing list. We grew the list
- and it keeps growing at a pretty good clip - just by
including a signup form on the web site. And we make
sure that every newsletter we send out has information
our market can use. In our case those are links back to
our site, but to information that helps the visitors
grow their business.

Our newsletters are text. We may switch to html in the
future, though. As far as how much the ads can sell
for, so far we've been using our newsletter space as
incentive (value add) for buying banner space on our
web site. When a list is small and your staff is small,
the time to get the sale, do the invoicing and tracking
whether you got paid for small amounts, isn't worth the
effort - not if there are other ways you can make that
same space pay off.

But at this point I am considering selling the
newsletter space separately - but with some type of
minimum number of issues - probably 4 weeks at minimum.
