This is just another form of pop-up windows, there are
several. The ones you speak of (porn sites etc.)
usually the most intrusive type which spawns a window
then another etc. Another form recently employed and
much more appealing perhaps to some advertisers as well
as site publishers is the status bar type. This one
does not pop-up really. It resides as a open browser on
your status bar on your browser. Later when the person
is closing that browser they will find it there.
Properly employed it has shown good results. It is less
intrusive as it never actually interrupts a visitor's
session and it does not pop up as you leave but only
resides as an open window on the status bar. More
networks are employing this recently. Hope that helps.
