I think what the initial discussion was about would be
auto-spawning the new browser window. I have one on
my site, actually, which pops up as a user leaves; but
this is done only once per visitor.

As for spawning a new browser for following links,
depending on your situation often users see this as an
advantage. Download sites and test sites add benefit
if it's easy to visit a test and come back. Personally
when following links I typically open them in new
browser windows anyway, and know a lot of other people
that do as well.

If it was once true, it isn't anymore. I used AOL a
bit ago (the newest version) and it had no problem
with _blank and _top tags.
