Ilona makes a valid point about the use of
target="_blank"
It has its place in the toolbox of interactive
marketers. I have seen it used and appreciated being
routed into new windows many times by sites in the
retailing business, most often to enlarge a small gif
into a full screen image. Some of them were polite
enough to include a command to close the window, some
let you figure it out for yourself.
Opening a new browser window seems most inappropriate
when the user is reaching out for a different web site.
If they want to leave, let them go.
