I disagree. I have a bunch of well-funded dot-coms
bidding against me on phrases that they don't really
have anything to do with. For example, my company
sells Porsche Parts. Barnes and Nobles has bid against
me on Porsche phrase, as well as many other generic car
dealers who sell to the masses. Someone looking for a
specialist like me has to scroll down the list.

With the paid advertising, you're reaching people that
these companies want to reach, not necessarily
companies that are relevant to the search. For
example, if a golf supplies company wanted to reach
affluent Porsche owners, they would also bid on the
word 'Porsche.'
