Yahoo's Sponsored Listings
Hello Advertisers,
As some of you may know already, Yahoo has made some dramatic
changes to its category listings. The change that is getting
the most notice is the "Sponsored Listings" portion where site
owners/marketers can purchase top listings on Yahoo within a
category.
The Sponsored Listings are kind of a hybrid between the Google
AdWords program and Yahoo's Editor's Picks. The placement is
relatively cheap (ranging from $25 to $300 a month, depending
on the popularity of the category). However, I'm not sure about
the limit of sites for this sponsorship, Yahoo states that all
sites that participate have a equal rotation per category.
The Sponsored Listings are only open to sites that are already
listed in the respected categories.
The second large change in the Yahoo listings are now before the
alphabetical category listings are Yahoo's "Most Popular"
listings. It looks like up to seven pages are chosen for these
premier unpaid listings. I'm not sure how to get one's site
listed here or whether Yahoo is using some sort of Direct Hit
technology to track the most popular sites. However, by judging
on some of the sites listed for categories that are of interest to
our clients- the sites listed are not popular sites or high
traffic competitors.
With search engines/portals like Go.com shutting down and
AltaVista revamping it self back to a simple web searching tool,
it seems that search engines need to look into alternative forms
of advertising and revenue generating.
There have been some interesting discussions on the usefullness
and success of Google's AdWords program and, of course, GoTo's
business plan seems to be successful.
Is this the future of search engine/keyword advertising?
Thank you,
Loren Baker
