Some people see their value to society as being
the recipient of advertising messages. You can
advertise to them anywhere and they take no
offense to it. Put up a poster on the inner face
of a public toilet stall door and they say, "Hey,
free reading material."
Others have a different take on the whole
subject.
One does not have to be anti-business to object
to intrusive or invasive advertising in a setting
where its presence is unexpected.
We in the advertising business need to be
sensitive to consumers wants and desires in
that regard because failing to do so causes
them to tune us out even more so than they do
already, and to legislate against the practices
of some of us.
A self-closing pop-up browser window is less
obnoxious than one which resists closing,
size and positioning held equal. However,
the vast majority web surfers hunting for
information still prefer no intrusions.
My $ 0.02.
