Re: Launching a new browser window

The thing is this: Is there a human being on the planet
that would rather not have advertisements on TV or on
the Internet? Unless you are in the market for the
product advertised, advertisements are generally just in
the way. However, without advertising nothing would be
"free." Can you imagine having to pay for every channel
on television like you have to pay for HBO, Showtime, or
Cinemax?
I think this is really the focal argument to pop-ups. If
the web site shoots out pop-ups that spawn more pop-ups
that spawn more pop-ups, then yes the user's control is
taken away. But does the user even have a right to complain
when there is just one ad window that pops up behind the
window so that it is able to make it's full presentation? I
don't think so, and I doubt that most North American would
either. After all, the Baby Boomers and Generation X have
each grown to expect advertisements on TV and on radio. In
fact, our grandparents and their parents learned to accept
advertisements during their favorite radio programs. The
only people who seem to have a problem with pop-ups are the
younger generation who have falsely learned that the Internet
is a medium that they have total control over. Without
advertising the Internet would be little more than personal
homepages and pay sites.
My company has a great deal of pop-up advertising which we
sell to advertisers. While pop-ups that load in front of
the window tend to be closed immediately 15-25% of the time,
windows that load behind the browser load almost every time
and the conversion rates can be as high as 10-15%. So even
though users would choose no advertisement if given a choice,
many will participate in the offer if given the opportunity.
