Content vs. Ads Ratio

Is there any guideline which stipulates how much is
the ideal content to advertising ratio on a webpage?
My contention is that beyond a particular number of
banners I am sure that the effectiveness for all the
advertisements on that page fall. So how do we know
what is the optimal number of ads or amount of
banner space one should dedicate on a page?
