For me - it's the exact opposite of the assumption here.
I actually don't click on banners anymore. I right-click
and open in an new window! Why? I'm usually not finished
with a site - the banner has caught my eye and distracted
my attention, but I may want to go right back to it when
I am done with the banner page. But if the banner page
"traps" me (as is done so often by accident or design)
I may not be able to find my way back, especially if I
have gone through an ordering process that locks me in
because it wants to re-fill a form or some such. As a
*user* I prefer to haveinternal information come up in
the same window and advertorial information pop up in a
new window so I can track back easily to the original site.
All that being said - what *I* want is not necessarily
what the *majority* wants - and I've seen no research
one way or the other. Everyone does seem to assume that
their wishes are those of the majority. I have learned
from bitter and embarrasing experience that this is not
always so.
