We launched our baby, ClusterTraffic
(http://www.clustertraffic.com/), November. The way it
works is by suggesting a site related to the one
you're leaving in a new (pop up) window.
We display the pop up for people "who didn't find what
they were looking for" i.e only for the ones who didn't
fall into the 2% conversion rate-category and we make a
maximum of one suggestion per person per 30 minutes.
So far we've "served" hundreds of thousands of these
"suggestions" and the really interesting observation is
that we've received almost as many positive comments as
complaints.
The next interesting observation is, people can opt out
(and we do respect that) if they find it annoying but
so far only a handful has opted out.
Finally, it works very well and looking at the comments
we've received the conversionrates at participating sites
it seems as if people in general don't mind an occational
pop up.
It's not what you do, it's the way you do it!
