Regarding the myriad legal requirements for web contests
or any contests, it's true that the rules and logistics
can eat you alive. I found a great solution, I used an
outsourced company that pools contests and does all the
work for you. In other words, 5 websites gave away a
Mercedes sport-ute, and it appeared on each site that
the contest was only with that site. There's nothing
deceptive about it, it's as if Yahoo ran an ad saying
"click here to win a Mercedes on Yahoo", and you click
and register, but the same ad is running on other sites,
customized to them. The contests are run in such a
way that the odds aren't ridiculous, they pool 5
smaller sites or a couple of larger ones, and it cuts
your costs. We paid $12,000 and it included the Mercedes
and all the admin. of details and rules. If you did a
cheaper prize, the cost would be lower but the
arrangements would be the same.
The contest was very successful for us. If anyone wants
the name of the company, e-mail me and I'll find out, but
there is more than one of them.
