The "death" of FREE stuff

Regarding the "death" of FREE stuff.
That's just plain silly.
FREE ain't dead by any means.
Ask napster who will only die, only by being killed.

We support our site through affiliate relationships
and banner ads, but it takes a really creative
approach to balance FREE content with just enough
promotion to help defer the costs of the site. The
key is to tie the promotion to he content to
cross-sell the content.

For example, straight banners featuring amazon stuff
just plain doesn't work, but an article on weight
loss combined with a few specific & relevant books
gets you some sales.

Has anyone had any experience with the Amazon
"honors" system where people will donate a buck to
you out of the goodness of their hearts to help pay,
as amazon puts it, "for all of your good work." I
can't imagine that people would actually do this.
They didn't do it for Steven King and I don't think
they'll do it for me, no matter how good the site
is. I was wondering if anyone has tried this
successfully.
