Perhaps Charles is right. When banner ads were new
everyone clicked them because they were not sure what
they were. Now that we all know that banner ads are
not always what they promise or they take away from
the content, people don't click them as much.

One thing I know for sure, when I removed 50% of my
banner ad spots my number of impressions increased by
10% --- now I only have banner ads on page I don't mind
my users leaving my site from. Other than that
everything else is focused on keeping them on my domain.
