Re: Q: What Major To Choose?
Way to go Charles! I graduated from Texas A&M
University with a Bachelor of Business
Administration in Marketing back in 1990. After
being in the Marketing field for the past 10 years,
I have the following advice for your choice in
universities and majors.
1. Decide what you would like to do in the
advertising field. Are you interested in writing
ad copy, designing the ads, or selling the
services of the ad agency? Are you interested in
doing all of the above?
2. If you are interested in writing ad copy, a
Marketing, Journalism, or Advertising degree would
be good to pursue.
3. If you are interested in designing the online ads,
an advertising or a graphic design degree would be good.
4. If you are interested in bringing in business to the
ad agencies, then a marketing or advertising degree
with a focus in Sales management would be a good choice.
5. If you have the money, go to a university in New York
City. That way, you could work part time as an intern at
an ad agency while you get your degree. It is critical
for you to intern (unfortunately, agencies generally
don't pay their interns) prior to graduation so that you
will be able to get a paid job upon graduation.
6. Be sure to build your network of acquaintances while
at college. If you decide to work in the same state that
you go to school, you will run into your fellow students
throughout your career. Years down the road, your dorm
room buddy may have the opportunity to mention your name
for a lucrative job.
Good luck!
