Re: Is Invasion of Privacy The Answer?

Denise,

1) A cookie by itself can't do what you're describing.
2) If you're getting a click sound every time you visit
a new page, this is probably a setting in IE that got
turned on on your machine, that gives you such sound
effects. I have them turned on because it makes it more
clear when I really have clicked on a link... though
I can't find the setting now, or I'd tell you where
it is. (If someone wanted to watch what you were doing
discreetly, they wouldn't give you this kind of a
tell-tale.)
3) There are certainly "spy-ware" programs that install
web movement trackers of the sort you're concerned about
along with your favorite shareware-- this is part of how
they can afford to be free, they harvest your demographic
data. Go to Gibson Research (http://www.grc.com/) for
more info on how to get rid of these, using free software
developed by Steve Gibson, an ancient and wonderful guru
of the PC world who's created several absolutely phenomenal
tools (including a disk recovery program called SpinRite
that's saved my bacon several times in the last 15 years).
"OptOut" is the free product that Steve offers to find
and get rid of virtually all "spy-ware" trackers on
the market.

Hope this information helps.
