This has been happening in the developer arena for a
while now. I subscribe to a website that is called a
"virtual book" by the publisher, a well-known tech book
house called Wrox Press. The site is called ASPToday.com
and I pay around $50/year for access to their database
of tech-related articles for the Microsoft enterprise
platform. Since Wrox charges anywhere from $40-100USD
per book, I figure that it is worth every penny since
I spend $200 - 300/month on development related books,
manuals, programming guides, etc...
Maybe other vertical industries should pay attention to
the technology publishing model in general. Microsoft
Press is a $1B+/year unit which sells training and
training materials to its own distribution network...
its certified partners... nice little incestuous revenue
model there. I bet I can come up with a similar
application for at least 10 vertical industries before
I can even finish this beer....
