Everything that takes user time without good reward for
it does defer users. Registrations are in particular
very annoying. If you do it wrong, then not only you
will deter visitrs (big time), but also those who will
bother to register will provide poor quality data.

The first one is fairly easy to beat -- just ask to
register where it matter, while the second one is a lot
harder. The only way to ensure you get quality data is
to make sure its in the best user's interest to privede
correct information, ie delivery address or email
address for order updates/notifications.
