I would say if you don't have to do it, avoid it. I have
been basically boycotting this one site because of this
gateway they have on their content - It did not occur to
me on my own to *lie* - then someone suggested I do so -
So recently, when they were once again recommended I did
lie, choosing a crude user-id expressing my disdain for
their registration requirement. To my amazement and
amusement no less than 6 other people chose the same user
name before me. I have to wonder just what the site thinks
it's getting from this nuisance page.
I understand that more than 50% of people say they give
false or misleading information on registration pages.
Unless there is a clear value proposition tied to the
registration (like customization features etc.) I would
think you are taking a large risk for relatively little
benefit. You can't email these people without their
permission - even if they give you their addresses,
unless you specifically say you are going to email them,
that's still considered spam in most places. So you might
get a bunch of demographic information that's functionally
useless because high numbers of your users are unlikely to
tell the truth about themselves.
