Server logs only give you so much. I mainly look at the
referrer information but even that is provided differently
depending on the browser. I have resorted to using
coded URL's for different campaigns and using a
redirector I setup at my site.

Each code is three - two digit hexadecimal number, i.e.
112233, each number represents a Purpose, Source, and
Copy in that order. I keep lists of each element
numbered then put the numbers together for the tag and
include it in my email or engines as
http://www.yourdomain.com/112233 or 112233@yourdomain.com
where 11 represents a purpose, 22 represents a source,
and 33 represents a piece of copy.

I adapted some charts from Netpreneur's Ad Marketing
discussion group to help me track and possibly do
split-run's of copy. The sample charts are located at:
http://www.netpreneur.org/connect/am/email_mktg/trackreport.html

This numbering scheme supports 16,777,216 different
combinations which I do not intend to use up this year
*smile* unless I figure out how to automate the text
ad rotation in my regular newsletter and every email.
In that event I should have my top 5 ads measured out
based on my purpose (or source, or copy). The number
crunching happens in Microsoft Excel.

If anyone knows of any automated software, I would love
to know about it. Until then, I will keep my notebook of
lists and a few files on my computer to track the
performance of my ads.

Best regards,

Justin

PS. One side note for those Systems Administrators out
there, don't use 4 groups of hexadecimal numbers because
it can translate as an ip address. This is something
spammers have done for years, and still works in some
browsers, something like http://www.yourdomain.com@11223344/
would go to IP address 17.34.51.68 which is not what you
intended.
