List of top media outlets for press releases?

Using the 80/20 theory, I'd like to obtain a list of
email and/or snail mail addresses of 80% of top media
outlets so that I can send press releases to them. One
set of press releases will be for my online auction-
related business. Another will be for a new nonprofit
foundation devoted to the study of rare diseases. (I
am doing a bit of volunteer P.R. work for the latter
organization, which doesn't even know what a press
release is.)

The thought here is that somewhere exists a relatively
small list of top-rated TV and radio shows, the most
popular newspapers and magazines, etc., that I could
purchase to hit 80% of the media-consuming population.
Yes, I know this isn't nearly as good as a lovingly
compiled list ofn personal contacts developed by a
full-time PR person over the years, but it's my
compromise of budget vs. time.

I am willing to pay for such a list.

Bonus question: Is the best way to send out press
releases these days email or snail mail?
