Some clients are justified on cutting their advertising
budgets in times of a downturn. After all it doesn't
make sense to throw money out with no return. I never
recommend NOT to cut their ad budget although it hits
me in the pocketbook.
Additionally, when things get really slow, for many
clients you can practically give away products and no
one will come get them. Creativity in ad content and
media placement become tantamount to success.
The most important thing clients forget is out of sight,
out of mind. Therefore to eliminate advertising totally
or severly in downtimes is a big mistake, as they will
have to spend more money to "catch up" when things turn
around. An advertising presence should be maintained at
all costs. They will be ahead of their competition (who
invariably will not advertise) when business picks up again.
