Affiliate links vs. other banner ads (was 'The value of banner ads ...'")

Forgive me if this is like extolling the virtues of
Coke on a Pepsi mailing list but... if you're getting
such awful results from advertising, why not switch
to featuring affiliate program links on your site instead?

If you know your audience and use targeted banners and
text links, you can make QUITE a bit more from so many
page views.

In fact, I may have to put on my flame-proof suit now,
but from reading many of the notes here and seeing the
enormous ad-angst on this list and elsewhere, it baffles
me why people still put up the same old banner ads in
general anyway.
