This is assuming that even more than 1% of the people
is going to download such a program. Granted, where
people are spreading the word about such programs,
they are more likely to be successful, but they are
not a real serious threat at this time and even when
people are spreading the word it's still a small
percentage and probably will be installed mostly by
those who ignore/hate ads automatically anyway.

I have to wonder just how targeted the ads are.
Anyway, Snowball reported that the CTR for the larger
ads is 18-36 times higher, an indication that someone's
clicking (even if it's also an indication that no one
was clicking their ads before). But regardless of all
that, the reality is that people are noticing these ads,
plain and simple. You know they're noticing because of
how many replies that thread got, good bad, or indifferent.
That was the problem with banners. Too easy to ignore.
Some might call larger ads the "price people have to pay"
for ignoring banners.
Looking at the boards in 960x720, I see plenty of wasted
white space on the right side. I don't see what's so
wrong with monetizing that space.
