Email Ads as Add-ons

The company I work with have recently developed and
are beta-testing a software product that facilitates the
insertion of targeted, rich media advertising into
personal email messages.

The insertion of the advertising content (or any other
content) is performed at the ISP level (but can also
be integrated into internal/corporate systems and email
providers such as Hotmail) and any User actions within
the advertising (clicks, transactions) is tracked and
reported.

Note that the advertising is inserted into the email
message, leaving the body message (the text and any
other graphics and attachments) intact. The
advertising component is not attached as a file, but
is viewed by the recipient direct from the email.

Is anyone aware of a technology already available
that does this?
