Indeed...

Advertising should be a way to provide money for
the server costs or something like that, but
should never ever be your only profit these days.
The advertising market is way too dangerous for
that, and doesn't provide enough money.

If you own a free service, why not make a LOT
better version of that service (ads free) ,
and charge $5 / month for it? A lot of people
will sign up for it, since it is such a low price,
and when you will have 100 members you will earn
$500 / month. Not too bad for a profit, and heck,
you have the free version to keep up with the
server costs. If you want to be sure you make
money off of it, run a CPA campaign at www.cj.com,
and you're sure your service will be branded a
little and you will only pay for users actually
signing up (maybe it will cost you $5 for the
first month/user, but in the end, you will have
profit) .

This is just one example of the many ways to
survive in these tough dot.com days...
