After reviewing this thread I am considering removing
Alexa from my browsers and depending solely on the
logs from my ad server to calculate changes in
traffic. Without knowing much statistics, I can derive
that a percentage of my traffic is cached for my static
pages, but my ad server specifically denies caching
from my server. Therefore, my ad server (which is a
separate machine) is most likely to reflect accurately
changes in traffic volume.
It is very difficult to measure changes in audience base
online. I recommend also measuring sales and leads
generated if you are doing commerce, because until
money is exchanged no one really knows how many visitors
reach a particular site. At least in the retail world
they can put a counter at the door, even then, they
can't scan for psychographic and demographic features.
Cordially,
Justin Hitt
