We are! We have reached the same decision this week.
Rather than scraping the bottom of the barrel and getting
ridiculously low CPMs, we decided to take down the
banner from certain pages, especially the ones focused
on consulting services and licensing of our tests (this
is the about-to-be-relaunched PsychTests.com) (For
a sneak preview, you can go to
http://www.psychtests.com/index_new.html
it's not yet fully functional, but almost there).
On the main page of PsychTests, the banner is gone.
On the remaining pages, we will cross-promote
Queendom.com (another site that my company runs).
On Queendom, we are setting a lower limit on CPM and
unless we can get that, we will run cross promotion
for various sections, promotion of PsychTests, and
advertise our software Cyclick (menstrual calendar
and planner for you ladies and considerate husbands
out there, you can download it at
http://www.queendom.com/about/prod_serv/software/cyclick/ ).
In the meanwhile, we are taking emphasis off advertising
and focusing on other sources of revenue. We will
still work with advertisers who are interested in
getting a fair deal, but it must be reasonable for
both parties. If not, it's not worth the value of
customers who would be leaving our site. No CPAs, no
CPCs (read banners with non-existent click-through),
no highly targeted deals for $1.00 CPM. Ad space on
our sites is valuable. If we can't get a fair price,
we might as well use it for the good of our site and
get our bacon elsewhere.
Just my 2 cents
