To run all streaming rich-media presentations, you
require some or the other plug-in. If I remember, I
don't even have a FLASH plug-in installed, because
whenever a site asks for such a thing, I leave the
site. Same with the email. The moment my email
software detects a message that needs some sort of
installation, I immediately get a notification, and
I always click on "No".
Am I paranoid? Or stubbornly want to remain outdated?
No. The thing is, I'll gladly go for streaming media
in an email if I have asked for it. But if it is a
marketing message that I still haven't seen, why the
hell do I have to make extra arrangements for it? In
the morning I had to go through a 10-minute email
download full of embedded graphics that offered to
sell me second hand pagers
Marketers forget that there are millions of email
users who have restricted Internet access. For
instance, I connect, download all the emails in
Outlook Express, disconnect, and then go through
them one by one. All the HTML emails look so ugly -
full of those empty squares. Compared to that, I
find text message much more amiable and easy to read.
I think the email should contain a link if a person
really wants to see a multi-media presentation.
Streaming media in emails could be great, but we
need the affordable bandwidth that is just not there
at the moment.
