Who's listening?

I caught the very tail end of the audio speakers
on/off business. I'm currently debating whether to
keep audio on my site. It is a consumer site for a
real estate development in SC. The background music
and voiceover clearly help to build the brand
experience when people visit. However, the talent
fees for the VO are climbing and we don't know if
it's worth it - mainly because it appears a lot of
people don't have their speakers on while web surfing.
Is there any research pointing to what percentage of
people actually have their speakers on? The numbers
may be different for at work and at home - I'd be
interested in both or any other guidance. Sorry if
this has already been covered - I'm new. Thx.
