A Question on Search Engines

Is there any way, besides purchasing keywords on
goto.com, to get your search engine submissions to show
up quickly on the search engines? I'll give an example.
My web site actually has good placement on google, msn,
altavista and some of the larger engines for the
keywords I used in the metatags and such. However the
search results show content from pages that are at
least 6 months old! Six months from now the search
engines will be showing the pages as they appear today,
regardless of how many updates I do in that time.

Maybe I'm exaggerating the time but it sure seems to me
like there's a HUGE delay between the time you submit
something and the time it appears in the listings.
Any suggestions?
