online advertising

I am involved with a couple business opportunities on the
internet. My question is ' What is the best way, or place
to advertise on the internet and get a response to your
ads? I know there`s a lot of hype, but I would like to
hear from someone who`s "been there, done that". Someone
who is successful, not just trying to sell something.
I`ve tried several ways with no results.
