I agree!! It certainly seems that search engines take
way too long to update pages and remove dead links.
I've noticed that FAST now claims to be the "freshest
index of any Internet search engine _ The entire
AlltheWeb.com index is fully refreshed every nine to
twelve days, more than five times as often as other
search engines, ensuring users have access to the
most up-to-date results available."

Maybe they'll lead the way by being the first exception
to the rule. Only time will tell.

If there is some sure-fire method, I don't know it.
And even if it existed, it would probably change
tomorrow. As a general rule, these days, to get
listed quickly (or in some cases to get listed at
all) you gotta pay for it.
I'm sure you already know about search engine sites
