I don't have any statistical information myself,
however, I do believe that in some cases you will be
better off bidding lower and trying to keep the 2nd or
3rd spot in a pay per click search engine.

When the keywords you are bidding on aren't absolutely
and without a doubt exactly related to the page or site
you are advertising, the 2nd and 3rd spots are better.

Even when you have a site devoted to Australian coins
and you bid on Australian coins, there will be people
looking to do different things when they visit your
site. Sell Australian coins? Buy Australian coins?
Valuate Australian coins? Information on or the history
of Australian coinage?

There probably isn't going to be a time when the 2nd
or 3rd positions are going to bring you more traffic, but
if your keywords are relevant, these spots will always
convert better.

Like I always say, the best way to find out with pay
per click search engines (or usually anything) is to try.

Give it a go, keep the stats and post the results here.

I hope that helps.
