How to choose Affiliate programs/Ad Banner and who to choose?

Hi,

I have been reading this digest for a while now. I have
found the most impressive and educational inputs from
people on this list and so have finally decided to post
my first question.

I am just starting out with a web site and I'm looking
into affiliate programs and banner ads. I would like to
mix it up, so we could get paid for banner views, banner
clicks, and lastly also sales/leads. I am not
necessarilly looking for a one-stop shop. I have been
thinking about CJ and LinkShare, however as I have heard
negative stuff about them on this list, so not sure.
What about BeFree.com, or some other ones that people
have had good experience with? Our audience will mainly
consist of college students and IT people in the beginning.
So of course I would like to cater them and with an option
to change the demographics later on. Another important
point of course will be not to have an exclusive only or
restrictive kind of contract. Any suggestions or
experiences people would like to share?
