Baud is loosely defined as BIT PER SECOND
("One baud is one electronic state change per second"
actually).

"The measure [baud] was named after a French engineer,
Jean-Maurice-Emile Baudot. It was first used to measure
the speed of telegraph transmissions."

Baud notation is no longer actively used outside old
timers and I believe was used by original author to
stress his point of returning to the dark ages when BAUD
was known to far more people than now.
