Smart Tags are not a hoax, and there is a way to turn
them off:

Add to your Meta Fields
<meta name="MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" content="TRUE">


However it is important to note that other SCUMWARE
like Gator, Ezula Top Text, and Spedia Surf+ are all
much worse and represent a real threat and loss to all
site owners and online advertisers.
