I'm not a graphics guru, so this is the short explanation.
I'm interested in this subject because of the useful
customer behavior data created by these logos.
The mini logo is called a favicon. All you need to do is
create the logo as a 16 x 16 pixel image, name it
favicon.ico, and upload it to the root directory of your
site. Most browsers (but not all) will call for it there
and post it to the Favorites List and other places where
shortcuts are created.
The neat customer data trick with favicons is this: If
you use WebTrends or other log analysis software, you can
track how many times favicon.ico has been called and keep
track of how many people are bookmarking your site.
Knowing what percentage of your traffic bookmarks your
site is a very important customer metric - one you can
track and improve on over time.
I know there is a lot more to favicons - using multiple
images, different images for different pages, and so on.
Just search Google for "favicon".
