Re: Will this make it easier for ad companies to spend money?
I would think so however I see problems once consumers
become aware they are being tracked...
I like the idea of advertisers being able to know how
may real people they got their message "in front of".
In my non-expert opinion it seems like a very promising
approach.
however...
Tracking users around sites for the purposes of reporting
to advertisers creates its own problems on the privacy
front. This will become more and more of a problem for
sites over time as users get wise to the stuff DCLK
and the like are doing in an effort to deliver value to
advertisers. In the end the consumer will decide what the
sites may and may not do with respect to tracking, cookies
etc. The online publishing industry will need to adapt
business models around consumer expectations and behavior.
Don't believe me...just ask the record companies how easy
it is to dictate to consumers.
I was blown away recently when I visited a site that had
one of those Amazon (hand-out begging) graphics. The damn
thing had my name in it. It said "Hello Ron Sheridan"...
and I freaked for a moment, got over it (cause I'm in
the online ad space so I tolerate that crap) and began to
wonder how others would and are in fact reacting.
Just today I was by chance visitng the
http://www.anonymizer.com site today via a link on
http://www.surferbeware.com. They offer a software
solution for surfing the web "annomously". Forget about
ad blockers...this stuff could really change the landscape
if it gathers critical mass. Of course the real scarry
thing would be if Microsoft bundled the functionality into
IE. Yikes!!
imho
Ron Sheridan
