Seems as though $600 will not even cover the salaries
of high school students. I am becoming much more
inclined to go directly to the companies and
advertisers whose products/services would most
benefit from my target audience and then charge $5 to
$30 CPM.

[Note from Moderator: I agree with Dale to some extent...
this strategy will work on niche sites with limited
inventories. I still get a CPM of around 10 on
tennisserver.com with tennis specific advertisers. It
is just not worth the cost of my time to even mess with
taking anything less. But that is because the content
is highly niche targeted and my traffic is not on the
order of millions of impressions. Scaling it up won't
work, because the cost of going directly to the
advertisers on a large scale is itself non-trivial.
