Are there really people who believe a site can sell at
a $1 CPM and stay in business? Can someone please tell
me how this would be possible, and what other media is
able to sell at such a low rate and remain in business?

Advertisers want to serve rich media, geo-target, etc.
etc. The low end ad servers will just not handle the
requirements that many, if not most advertisers require,
so if we use a system like DART we would pay a
considerable % of that $1 to them, then there are
commissions for us reps and all the other costs....content
is not free you know!

Sorry, but I fail to see how anyone could remain in
business, even with revenue streams other than only
advertising and sell at a $1 CPM!
