One trick I use is to subscribe to the lists and newsletters
related to my business and receive their mailings for a good
period of time before I decide to invest my ad dollars with
them.

This way, I know first hand the kind of audience they have
and what kind of mailings they do. And whether their
subscribers look forward to receiving the mailings or it is
just another junk mail list.
