Finding an online media representative
I run a well established, highly targeted web site and email newsletter
that is doing slightly better than breaking even with a small base of
long-term sponsors. Virtually all ad sales have come over-the-transom
from companies with products in our topic space (where we are by far the
leading independent information source). We have done no active
marketing to speak of.
In other words, based solely on our online presence, we're successful.
What's holding us back from moving to the next level -- providing better
content to our visitors and a better vehicle for sponsors to bring their
products to our visitors' attention? We need someone to manage our
sponsorship effort, both the creative integration of ad content into the
web site and newsletter and the actual procurement of sales contracts.
We have no shortage of leads, since we know the potential sponsors in
our topic space quite well. The deficit is in staff and know-how. (I'm a
content provider, not a web designer or salesperson.)
I believe there is enough potential revenue to justify a
high-commission, half-time position, maybe more. I'd also be willing to
consider an agency, if I could find one excited about the targeted
nature of our site, but since we're at about 850k monthly views, we're
probably still too small for most agencies to be interested.
What successes have other list members had in recruiting online
advertising sales representatives? I'd be particularly interested in
seeing employment ads that helped you find the right person.
