Depends what sort of promo material you have.
If you have some flashy multimedia CD is a way to go.

I do know about the software side cause we're designing and
selling royalty free promotional applications...

They're in range of $50 (no zeros missing) up to few $K.
Most orders are $150-300.

About music... I recently stumbled accross some Corel royalty free
music colection... Nothing special but good.

For a recent project we used nice Christmas tunes downloaded
from http://www.partnersinrhyme.com .

Check out some software freebies that we created as a giveway:
http://www.freewaregadgets.com. This site was launced for this season
Christmas freebies promotion that we did for our own company.
In future we plan to use the site for distribution of software ad specialty
products that we create for other companies.

I aggree! However, if you offer a good package and maybe include
a flyer/prospectus together with the CD, busy people like you would
be reached to. CD would only be a plus.

This I can understand too.

That's what I meant when I said I drop CD's that look non-trustworthy.

If the design and associated material would be more persuasive

maybe I would think about installing it.

However, I think installing should be offered only as an option.
If I have to install anything before actually understand what's
it all about... like you, I would simply drop the CD!

Indeed!

That's why I believe this type of promotion must be carefully planned.

Here is for instance what we plan to do next month:

We will create a limited edition of Mini-CD ROM's packed with
simple but well designed "multimedia" (only a software interface
to help readers browse the content) presentation, featuring
some of our projects and case studies.

CD will be sent only to selected journalists and will contain a gift!
Free software (Customized promotional PIM) that will be both
usefull to them and will at the same time demonstrate what we can do.

CD (Mini-CD) will be packed in a glossy 3D "envelope/box"
and will be accompanied by a personalized letter.

This will coincide with the relaunch of redesigned site at:
http://www.softwareadspecialties.com (currently this only redirects
users to our main site).

We plan to mention some invitation for their readers including a
limited time offer, a gift that they'll be able to download from our site
(this part is still not fuzzy... it's work in proggress actually).
