Michael,
The Web has three currencies: time, money and information.
There are thousands of links to be had for no money on the
Web, but you need to pay in the form of worthwhile
information and time to seek out the opportunities, or
really exceptional information, if you want the
opportunities to find you.
The vast majority of Web sites do not have exceptional
information. It is unlikely that other Webmasters will seek
them out to link to them. In order to find the free link
opportunities you must spend time to seek them out and
negotiate links to your site.
Not all free links are created equal. A link from an editor
at about.com, for example is worth significantly more than
a link from a site that has no traffic to speak of. The
services you are talking about have software that will submit
your site to hundreds of sites that provide "free for all"
links pages. The vast majority of these sites will not
provide any traffic to your site.
The short answer is that you get what you pay for. Much better
to spend your time or be willing to pay money for links,
either through advertising or through paying a not so small
fee to a reputable link
placement agency.
